3 Career Resolutions for 2021

What a crazy 2020! I don’t know about you, but I had to change so many of my career resolutions for 2020 more than once. I made changes I would have never thought I would have had to make. Then, just before the end of 2020, the state of California issued another stay-at-home order.

My holiday plans were canceled and with that so did any resemblance of how I thought the new year would go. I feel like I’m just now coming up for a breath and half the year is almost over!

I’m here to tell you, though, it’s never too late to create some career resolutions for 2021. Creating resolutions is about vocalizing your dreams and desires. This gives power to your intention. There are three career resolutions for 2021 that all of us should make.

  • Prioritize wellbeing and healthy lifestyle choices.

Wellbeing means to integrate your physical and mental health to create a holistic approach to health. Wellbeing is associated with longevity, positive outlook, social connectedness, and productivity. Higher levels of wellbeing are associated with decreased risk of illness and disease

One thing we’ve learned this past year is how important our overall health matters. Find simple ways to prioritize your health to make positive lifestyle choices. Begin small like purchasing organic options for the foods on the dirty dozen list or walking 30 minutes every other day. Even with these small changes, you will notice a shift in your wellbeing.

  • Give your online brand a 2021 facelift.

I’m always talking to my career coaching clients about their online brand. Employers will check out your social media accounts before offering you a position. Begin with a social media audit. Look at ALL of your social platforms. Google your name to see what comes up. Pro tip: log out of your Google account or use the incognito feature to see what others see when they Google your name.

Clean up your social by deleting accounts you no longer use, delete images, or archive comments or posts that are not favorable. Next, update any information that has changed. Build your LinkedIn profile for the job you want not the jobs you’ve had.

More and more employers are using social media as a recruiting tool. Giving your online brand an update annually is a must do.

  • Expand your online networking strategy.

Networking is still the number one way to find a new job. With the global shutdown, online networking has become the only way to network. After – stress AFTER – you give your online brand its annual facelift, implement an online networking strategy.

Your online networking strategy should begin with LinkedIn. LinkedIn is the number one professional social networking site. Just don’t stop there. You can use Pinterest or Instagram to highlight examples of your work. This is imperative if you work in a creative industry like graphic design, film, or creative arts. Facebook groups is another great place to network.

Reach out to your existing connections. Often, we reach out only when we need something. Take a minute to reacquaint yourself with your existing network. Find a reason to reach out to each person with something of value such as an interesting blog or new trends in their industry. Schedule an informational interview. Informational interviews are a way of playing detective or journalist – you’re asking questions to learn about their field of expertise.

Write articles, join groups, and participate in the conversation. All of these things will improve your online brand and increase your network.

Last year changed the way we do business. It is estimated that 1 in 4 Americans will remain working from home through 2021. In-person events and conferences will look different than they did in the past. Online options for meetings, conferences, and skills workshops are here to stay. And the gig economy will continue to flourish.

It’s time to embrace these changes.
