Woman sitting at computer: How to Build an Authentic Brand

How to Build an Authentic Brand

Your brand is how you make people feel when they encounter you—on stage, online, and in every room you walk into. Step one is to build an authentic brand that reflects who you are, what you value, and how you want to show up in the world.

The strongest personal brands are built with intention. They’re grounded in clear values, expressed through a consistent tone of voice, and reinforced with visuals that create immediate recognition. When those elements are aligned, your brand resonates.

Here, I’ll share what I do to build a brand that’s bold, credible, and, most importantly, one that’s truly you.

Lead with Values

Your brand values are the throughline of your story that guide your decisions, shape your message, and communicate what truly matters to you. They’re the backbone of how you lead, speak, write, and show up. And when they’re clear and consistent, they act as a magnet to draw in the right audiences, clients, and opportunities.

High-level professionals often default to describing what they do. But in the personal branding space, the real power comes from sharing why you do it. Clarity gives people something to connect to and remember.

Your values come through in the stories you share on stages like TEDx, in your website content, and in the conversations you have with your audience through social media.

Your core values make you who you are, and when you’re aligned with them, you feel most yourself. If you’re struggling here, use this simple worksheet to identify your core values. Keep in mind, these are the values you fiercely protect and refuse to compromise on. They are your compass.

Define Your Tone

If your values are the why, your tone is the how.

Tone is the emotional undercurrent of your brand voice. It’s the difference between sounding approachable or authoritative, bold or reflective, fierce or nurturing. And it matters more than you think, especially when you’re building an authentic brand that spans across stages, interviews, written content, and social platforms.

Your tone should flex slightly depending on the medium (a keynote sounds different from an op-ed), but the essence should stay the same. If you’re direct and visionary, your IRL and digital presence should reflect that. If you’re thoughtful and collaborative, that tone should show up.

Misalignment can chip away at your credibility. A luxury leadership brand shouldn’t sound overly casual online. A mission-driven founder shouldn’t sound robotic in their keynote.

Your tone is what helps build your know, like, and trust factor.

Align Your Visuals

Your visual brand is often the first impression your clients or customers will see. Your visual brand includes headshots, slide decks, website graphics and colors, social media cover images, and even the cover of your book. Your visuals should tell a consistent, compelling story.

The goal is to be recognizable, memorable, and unmistakably aligned with who you are and what you stand for.

Select a color palette that reflects your personality and professional identity. For example, bold colors, like red, convey energy and confidence. Blue conveys trust. Shape matters. Circles are a symbol of stability, continuity, and perseverance. Squares and rectangles suggest reliability, order, and confidence. Triangles evoke power, strength, and energy.

Your visuals create instant recognition when someone sees your event poster, book cover, or online graphics. Visuals should elevate your presence, not just decorate it.

Create an Authentic Brand People Recognize Instantly

You get to write your brand story, which begins by building an authentic brand based on your values, tone, and visuals. When those are off kilter, you confuse your audience.

That’s why personal branding takes clarity, consistency, and intention. And when it’s done well, it becomes a powerful force behind what you do. It’s also the best way to land speaking gigs or book deals because when you build an authentic brand, you build your know, like, and trust factor.

Here’s your next move: Audit how you show up in person and online. Do the platforms you use reflect who you really are? Is your message consistent and clear? S

I recommend doing a thorough brand audit at least once a year.
