How to find a great career

How To Find a Great Career | 4 Steps To Land The Right Job

A great career is more than one that fills your wallet. A great career aligns with who you are, makes an impact on the world, and pays well.

I work with clients who are often at a crossroads. They want more fulfilling work but have no idea where to start. Or they don’t believe they have the skills needed to change careers. Most of what drives us forward or holds us back is fear or limited beliefs.

When we can set these fears aside, we can learn how to find a great career. Trust me, everyone struggles with self-doubt. Believe me, I have had to learn to work through my own limited beliefs to get my career off the ground.

Here are a few steps you can take to find a great career.

Be clear on what you want.

One of the best ways to find clarity is to strip away all your barriers. What would you do if money was not a factor? I wrote a guide to help you figure out your passion. Use this guide to help you find what makes you happy and what motivates you. Take the time to discover who you are, what your values are, and what interests you.

See if you can identify your dream job. Does that job exist? If so, get out there and do some research! Find people on LinkedIn who are doing what you want to do and reach out. Most people will carve some time in their day to tell you about their job and offer some inside tips to the profession.

Getting clarity is the first step to finding a great career that is rewarding for you. It is also the first step in putting together your career path, but more on that in a minute!

Work through fear.

Fear can be stifling. It is that pit in your stomach that is relentless. But have ever worked through your fears? What was that feeling like? If you’re anything like me, it’s exhilarating. A lot of our fears come from money. We’re afraid to make changes in our careers because we might have to take a pay cut or dip into our savings. Life is too short to stay stuck in a job you hate. Identify your fears and then ask yourself, “What is the worst-case scenario if this fear comes true?” Follow that question up with the more important question, “What will my life be like if I don’t move past these fears?”

When you’re learning how to find a great career, you will need to establish monetary goals for yourself. Just as important is also identifying your strengths. Draw on those strengths to work through the fear you’re feeling.

Believe you can do anything.

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right,” Henry Ford. Since then, manifestation has become mainstream as has asking the universe for what you want. You have to believe you can do anything. It is about creating a mindset to achieve.

You have already done more in life than you think you have.

Think about that for a minute. We are our worst critics. We don’t acknowledge the things we’ve done. Think simply about your college degree – what did you do to achieve your degree? What sacrifices did you make? Think about all you accomplished in the classroom and out of the classroom. College is not an easy feat – but you did it. You had a mindset to graduate – to achieve – and you did.

Take action.

You may find that your dream job is becoming CEO of the largest fashion dynasty in North America. You’ve chosen your career path. Next you will have to assess your education, your training, and your skillset.

Here is an example of a career path to the CEO seat: sales associate – cashier – assistant manager – store manager – regional manager – North America markets manager – CEO.

As soon as you know where you’re going, you can develop a plan to get there. Your education and training may allow you to start higher up on the career path, it may not. But you definitely won’t get where you want to go if you don’t take action.
