How You Know You’re Ready to Become a Public Speaker

Public speaking builds confidence, establishes leadership, advances careers, and skyrockets personal brands. Speaking effectively in front of an audience is one of the most valuable skills you can master — and anyone can master public speaking. But how do you know you’re ready to become a public speaker? Or that public speaking is right for your brand or industry?

If you have an idea, process, or experience that is unique to you but shares a common thread with your target audience, sharing your story and idea through a TEDx talk or other big stage makes sense.

A signature talk is as much about building hope as it is about cultivating an audience.

Psychologists define hope as a desire for something to happen or to be true. It can have a profound influence on emotions, actions, and how a person feels.

Most often, hope is interpreted through optimism, belief, and a sense of something better. Hope inspires action — you’re not just making people feel something; you’re giving them an entirely new way to see the world around them.

Here are three signs you’re ready to become a public speaker:

You Have a Unique Perspective That Sparks Transformation

If your idea shifts the way people think, whether you are sharing a unique method, a personal experience, or a counterintuitive thought, consider sharing. Use a public speaking platform to introduce a new framework to work from. This is what I did at TEDxBerkeley. I introduced the idea of doing what you are, not what you love.

Most career coaches at the time were pushing passion. Instead, I introduced a person’s CORE SKILL SET and suggested that finding a career where you tapped into what you innately do will be more rewarding than following a passion. My talk opened up an entirely new way to search for a job. The talk went viral, and my brand new career coaching practice was filled with clients.

The talk was successful for two reasons:

  1. It was an original idea based on a lived experience.
  2. It delivered optimism for job seekers — hope.

People Are Already Looking to You for Guidance

When I was living in DC, I met people at a local Starbucks who were seeking career advice. The work was outside anything I was doing for national security and outside the framework of my degree. But people wanted to hear about my experience job hunting and securing a position at the Pentagon. They were already looking to me for guidance. What I was just starting to realize at the time was that this was my gift — my core skills.

When we tap into what is innately us, we have a much greater impact on those around us — we become guides because we honor our authentic selves.

This can show up in many ways. If you’re asked to share your expertise in meetings, invited to speak on podcasts, or asked to be a mentor … these are all signs your voice matters. Giving a TEDx talk or keynote speech is just a way to scale your influence and impact thousands.

You’re Willing to Do the Work to Craft a Signature Talk

Being “ready” for public speaking is more than having a message — your message needs to be refined into a world-class talk. A signature talk captivates, resonates, and stays with your audience long after you leave the stage. You do this by building a stage presence and using storytelling to thread your topic throughout your talk.

Crafting your talk requires dedication in writing, refining, and practicing. The beauty of a 10-minute talk is that it can easily be memorized with time and effort. This gives you the freedom to own the stage and make a real impact.

TEDxBerkeley changed the trajectory of my career. It is why I am so passionate about the impact of delivering a signature talk and why Wise Whisper is dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and professionals change the course of their careers. If your message challenges the status quo, introduces a fresh framework, or simplifies a complex idea in a way that feels authentic, consider delivering a talk on a big stage with a large YouTube following.

A signature talk can take your message from one to many and have a profound effect on your career and your life.
