Revenue is the scoreboard for success and the metric we use to say, “I made it!” But the real fuel behind success is well-being. Wellness is a pivotal—and maybe the most important—key performance indicator (KPI) for entrepreneurs. It impacts individual success and business outcomes.
Think of wellness as your silent business partner. When you ignore it, it quietly cuts away at your energy, creativity, and leadership. But when you prioritize wellness, it becomes a multiplier for everything else you do.
This article explores why wellness deserves a seat at the table and a few wellness KPIs worth tracking and how.
Limits of a Revenue-Only Focus
As entrepreneurs, we are masters at hitting goals. We’ve adopted a culture of ‘rise and grind’ rewards. And we ignore the cracks until they split wide open. The very mindset driving success can also be the one draining it.
Revenue only tells half the story. You can be growing your business while shrinking your capacity to enjoy it. And while you might be able to push through for a while, eventually, the cost shows up—missed opportunities, health setbacks, strained relationships, or simply the realization that you’re building a life you don’t want to live in.
When wellness isn’t measured, it’s not managed. Burnout becomes inevitable. Your success should amplify your life, not consume it. That’s why tracking wellness as a KPI isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s a necessity for longevity, creativity, and true leadership.
What Does Wellness as a KPI Look Like?
The health and wellness industry is big business. According to the Global Wellness Institute, the industry is expected to reach $9T by 2028. Businesses spend upwards of $1200 per employee annually on wellness programs targeting stress, healthy eating, and biometric factors.
Most wellness KPIs are subjective, such as energy, clarity, and sleep. Biometrics are an objective way to assess physical well-being. Your Wellness KPI dashboard should include a mix of subjective and objective measures.
- Sleep Habits. Use a simple sleep habit test (like this one from Psychology Today) to assess sleep habits. Notice what you’re doing well and where you can make improvements.
Your goal is to create a pleasant place to sleep that is cool, dark, and distraction-free.
- Well-being Assessment (WHO-5). The WHO-5 is a simple 5-question assessment that measures cheerfulness, calmness, and energy. It’s a quick way to track improvements and see where there are gaps in your wellness.
- Biometrics. This is an objective way to measure your overall well-being. Simple blood screens measure cholesterol, blood glucose, and other key factors, such as inflammatory markers, influencing health. Biometrics also include anthropomorphic measurements, like body weight, BMI, and hip-waist circumference.
Biometric screenings give you an excellent snapshot of your physical health and can identify potential health risks.
Use the free tools available as a gauge to see where you’re doing. I also highly recommend journaling during this process. It’s an excellent wellness practice, can help you track trends or thought patterns, and it can be used to identify events in your life that caused your well-being to shift.
Wellness is a Mindset Shift
Wellness is the foundation that makes our goals possible in the first place. Make decisions that serve your ambition and your longevity.
As high-achievers, it often feels like we’re running a sprint, but in business and life, we’re going for distance. Ask yourself this important question, “How did I feel while I accomplished this [goal]?”
When wellness becomes part of the conversation, it changes how you show up for your business, team, clients, and yourself. It helps you stay in the game longer, lead with more clarity, and enjoy the process and life you’re working so hard to build.
